The powerful want us to think that the systems in place for making them learn their lessons function properly. The powerful want us to think they are miserable so that we don’t try to take power from them and become miserable ourselves. This ground-breaking film is not for the faint-hearted. Pretending that Belfort learns his lesson, or hates what he’s done, or is punished would be capitulating to how the powerful want us to see them. The Wolf of Wall Street is based on the true story of wealthy stockbroker Jordan Belfort (played by Leonardo DiCaprio), whos living the luxurious high life after teaming up with Donnie Azoff (Jonah Hill) and a team of brokers to make their fortune by swindling wealthy investors out of millions. To tack on a “happy ending” in which Belfort gets punished or is revealed to be secretly miserable isn’t just pandering to audience wish-fulfillment. Why tell his story? Because Belforts run the world. Why wasn’t he punished? Because he’s rich. "Belfort is a bad man, money made him happy, he didn’t learn a lesson, and he was never really punished.
